Visit Armagh

On the Palace Demesne area there are numerous interesting features including the former Palace Stables Heritage Centre, which was a restored Georgian Stable block, the Primates Chapel and the Archbishop's Palace. The Archbishop’s Palace is was erected in 1770 by Architect Thomas Cooley for Archbishop Richard Robinson.  It is now the offices of Armagh City and District Council.    

Franciscan Friary is located at Palace Demense and was founded by Archbishop O’Scannail in 1263/64.  It has prominent patrons and played an important part in the city’s religious life until it was suppressed in 1542.  Some religious life continued but the buildings were involved in warfare later in the 16th century and were ruined by 1600.  Two empty graves and two tombs recesses near the east end are reminders of the important patrons buried in the Friary Church, including Gormalith O’Donnell, wife of Domhnail O’Neill in 1353.

The Palace Stables Heritage Centre is now closed to the public, however Armagh City and District Council can offer visitors to Armagh two other exciting attractions, namely the Navan Centre and Saint Patrick's Trian Visitor Complex.
