Armagh Public Library is the oldest library in Northern Ireland, was founded in 1771 by Archbishop Richard Robinson as part of his plan to establish a university.  The nucleus of the collection is Archbishop Robinson's own library, containing 17th & 18th century books on theology, philosophy, classic and modern literature, voyages and travel, history, medicine and law.  There are engravings by printmakers such as Piranesi and Hogarth, and archival material relating to Christian heritage in Ireland and Europe.  The Library also holds resources to aid family history research.

Opening:  Monday - Friday: 10.00am - 1.00pm & 2.00pm - 4.00pm. 
Opened other times by appointment.

This reference library has a wide range of material on all aspects of Irish life and learning from the earliest times to the present day.   One of its main assets is its newspaper collection, which includes local, provincial and national papers.  It offers full research facilities, individual attention and when required informed advice and guidance from professional members of staff who are subject specialists.

Sources held at the library include:
1901 Census for Armagh.  Primary Valuation of Ireland (Griffith's Valuation) 1848 - 1864.  Tithe Applotment Books, 1823 - 1838.  Trade Directories from 1758 (date incomplete). Newspapers 1738 - present.  Books detailing genealogies of individual families, national and regional.  Journals from mainly 19th and 20th centuries.   Also important local data:

  • Hearth Money Rolls, County Armagh, 1864.  In Archivium Hibernicum, vol V111, 1941.
  • Rent-Roll of houses and lands belonging to the See of Armagh, 1620.  In Archivium Hibernicum, vol V111, 1941.
  • Armagh City:  Various surveys of inhabitants, 1615 - 1770 in Seanchas ARd Mhacha, vol.1, no.2 1955 (including Lodge's census of the city of Armagh, 1770).
  • Local Sources:  Seagoe Parish records 1660 - 1985.  Freeholders 1813 - 1840 including Voters names, townlands, landlord, value of freehold, lives.  Crossle Papers up to 1900 covering Newry and Environs.

The Cardinal O'Fiaich Memorial Library and Archive is a free, independent public reference library, which houses important collections relating to Irish history, the Irish language, ecclesiastical history, the Irish abroad and Irish sport, particularly Gaelic games in Ulster.  It is also a designated centre for Roman Catholic records for the archdiocese of Armagh.

Sources Include:
  • Primary Sources: Catholic Parish Registers for the Diocese of Armagh, including counties Armagh, Tyrone, Louth and South Derry - pre 1900 Births, Deaths and Marriages.
  • Clerical Register for Archdiocese of Armagh
  • Overseas Archive (relating to the Irish in Europe 1600 - 1900 including marriages, genealogies and military service records).
  • Census materials and census substitutes.
  • Gaelic genealogies.  Ecclesiastical and local histories.
  • Reference materials on sources for genealogical research outside Armagh
  • Expert advice on the Etymology of place-names, townlands and family names.  Ancient ecclesiastical sites and parishes.  The history of Gaelic and Normal families.

Armagh County Museum will assist you to undertake a local history and family research project.   The library is a valuable resource for all researchers and include the TGF Patterson Manuscript Collection, detailing history of over 280 families.  Other sources include the Muster Rolls of 1630; the Hearth Money Rolls of 1664; the Depositions of 1641 relating to Armagh; the Records of the Archbishop's Rentals from 1615 - 1746 and the Poll Book of 1753 to name but a few.  Maps, photographs, drawings and a good local history library are also available.

Armagh Ancestry is the Irish Family History Foundation designated research centre for genealogical research in County Armagh.   It is a member of the Irish Family History Foundation, a 32 county, cross-border foundation, appointed by both the Church and State to create a national genealogical archive for the whole of Ireland.  The service aims to help people who have an interest in tracing their family roots in County Armagh.

St Mark's Church Office hold all Church of Ireland Births, Deaths and Marriages from 1705.   From 1811 they hold their own records.
